Forschungszentrum Jülich
Excellent research collaboration opportunities
Forschungszentrum Jülich makes a vital contribution to solving major challenges facing society in the fields of information, energy, and bioeconomy. It focuses on the future of information technologies and information processing, complex processes in the human brain, the transformation of the energy system, and a sustainable bioeconomy. Forschungszentrum Jülich develops simulation and data sciences as a key research method and makes use of large, often unique, scientific infrastructures. Its work spans a range of topics and disciplines and it exploits synergies between the research areas. With some 5,800 employees, Jülich – a member of the Helmholtz Association – is one of Europe's large research centres.
Use-inspired Basic Research
Forschungszentrum Jülich focuses on use-inspired basic research. It adopts an interdisciplinary approach and investigates relations between research areas energy, information, and sustainable bioeconomy.
ENERGY
The scientific objective of energy research is an energy system based on renewable energy which will help make the transformation of the German energy sector ("Energiewende") a success as well as limiting climate change. The contributions to research and development made by the Institute of Energy and Climate Research (IEK) include energy conversion methods and energy storage technologies as well as the mechanisms of climate change. INFORMATION
Scientists in the research area of information investigate how information is processed in biological and technical systems. The focus here is on brain research, basic research for future information technologies, and supercomputing. More
BIOECONOMY
This research field is concerned with contributing to a bio-based value chain permitting a sustainable economy. Research into a sustainable bioeconomy comprises work in biotechnology, plant research, and soil research (agrosphere). This work aims to support the transition from an oil-based to a bio-based economy and to contribute to the efforts to feed a growing global population. More
RESEARCH INFRASTRUCTURES
Scientists have access to state-of-the-art instruments and large-scale facilities at Forschungszentrum Jülich. Some of these are used by teams of scientists from all over the world – experts at Jülich provide them with professional advice and support. Overview

Get started
Kick-start your career as PhD student or as head of your own young investigators group - Forschungszentrum Jülich offers talented scientists superb career opportunities. The research centre offers an exceptional scientific infrastructure and leading scientists assist you. Further, Forschungszentrum Juelich participates in the Helmholtz Postdoc Programme. Funding for up to three years enables young scientists to enhance their own research profile directly after their PhD. Another form of recognition is the Juelich Excellence Prize, which is awarded by a panel of recognized experts. Supporting young people and early-career scientists is one of Forschungszentrum Jülich's central concerns. At the moment, there are 950 doctoral researchers from some 50 countries at Forschungszentrum Jülich.
